Did you know that data centers consume 2% of the world's electricity and that a single internet search can generate 7 grams of CO₂? Every click, every algorithm, every line of code leaves a footprint. The digital world is not ethereal, but deeply material, and its hidden side includes planned obsolescence, the unlimited extraction of natural resources, and artificial intelligence controlled by large corporations. But alternatives exist.
The cycle «From the digital footprint to sustainable artificial intelligence» aims to open the debate on how we can reconquer technology and use it to serve society and the planet. This initiative is supported by the collaboration of Digicòria, Colectic, the Aula Ambiental de Sant Andreu, professor and researcher Ana Valdívia, and the Tu Nube Seca Mi Río collective. Admission is free, but prior registration for each activity is recommended to secure a spot.
A Proximity AI
Did you know that AI doesn’t necessarily have to depend on large corporations or polluting infrastructures? On Wednesday, February 19th from 18:00 to 19:30, we will explore how sovereign AI models managed by communities can be developed using open and decentralized technologies.
We will get to know three innovative projects that are setting trends: Agregore, a browser that allows the use of language models (LLMs) locally, presented by Mauve from Canada; Te Hiku, a project from New Zealand dedicated to developing voice models in Māori, explained by Miles Thompson; and an UPC project that explores the application of machine learning to IoT nodes, presented by Nil Llisterri and Felix Freitag.

What footprint does your phone leave?
In this practical activity, organized by the Aula Ambiental de Sant Andreu and Colectic, we will explore the environmental impact of daily technology use. Through collaborative work and a visual mapping, on Thursday, February 27th from 18:00 to 20:00 h, we will analyze how material traceability, natural resource extraction, and planned obsolescence are interconnected.
We will also address the phenomenon of colonial plundering that accompanies the mass production and consumption of electronic devices. An opportunity to reflect, learn, and explore how we can reduce our digital footprint.

The cloud is a ship… and it pollutes!
Artificial intelligence is the future… but at what cost? How can we rethink technology to make it more just and ecological? On Thursday, April 3rd from 18:00 to 19:30, we will explore how AI affects the environment: global warming, resource extraction, and global inequalities are just some of its consequences.
With professor and researcher Ana Valdívia and the collective Tu Nube Seca Mi Río, we will discuss solutions and alternatives that put sustainability at the center.
