Collective Memories, Climate Struggles, and Digital Rights Take the Stage at Canòdrom

The new season in the stands of the Canòdrom begins with open spaces to discuss the climate emergency, the collective memory of the neighborhood, and digital rights. Community projects linked to the facility are participating, with the involvement of residents and neighbors.

Recovering the neighborhood’s memory

Ginebra, the host of this second episode, began with a look at the past and an emotional conversation about historical memory. The roundtable included Carmen Santana and Alfred Puig, neighbors involved in the «Fem Memòries» project at the Canòdrom. This group of neighbors has worked together to document and digitize old photos of the neighborhood, uploading them to the Living Memory Bank to share memories.

Thanks to this community project, hidden facets of the Canòdrom have been discovered, breaking away from the idealized image of this space and rediscovering stories that had been forgotten until now. At the same time, they have opened the door to new interpretations of the Canòdrom and the surrounding neighborhoods.

This year, the project «Fem Memòries» is taking a step further by involving the youth of the Congrés and Indians neighborhoods. Together they will investigate the past of the Canòdrom and the neighborhood, using materials from the Living Memory Bank to create an exhibition that will offer new narratives. Additionally, they will document with current photographs to enrich the present-day image bank, which will become the memories of the future.

The climate crisis in focus

One of the central topics of the program was the climate crisis. Isabelle Bonhoure and Maday Margarita Rivero, the leader and facilitator of the project «Heat Chronicles» in the Congrés and Indians neighborhoods, as representatives of Open Systems, shared their research experiences, which involved residents in measuring temperatures in public spaces during extreme heat episodes. These data, essential for better urban planning, will help cities adapt to the effects of climate change.

This and much more will be discussed at the Decidim Fest 2024, which will take place from October 25th to 27th at the Canòdrom. This festival will bring together activists and technologists to co-create solutions to the most pressing challenges facing our society. This year, the central theme will be the climate emergency under the slogan: «Ecology, Technology, and Democracy. Another future is possible.» Nil Homedes, director of the Technical Office of the Decidim Association, spoke about the Decidim Fest, emphasizing that individual actions are not enough when the problem is global and that we must think about the role institutions should play in taking measures for more sustainable societies.

The effects of technology and digital rights

Technology and digital rights were the focus of the last debate of the program, with the presentation of two projects linked to the Canòdrom, reflecting on the impact of screens.

Nadia, a psychologist from the organization Fem Bloc, warned about gender-based violence in digital environments and highlighted the urgent need to protect our online privacy. She pointed out that having secure passwords is an essential step to staying safe and protected.

Meanwhile, the project «Youth, Screens, and Action» as part of the «Growing Up Among Screens» series, a collaboration between the Institut l’Alzina and the Canòdrom, presented a study on the impact of screens on young people’s lives. The students at the institute analyzed through surveys how they experience their relationship with screens and found that the problems were not individual but global.

Mar Escarrabill, a community participation officer at the Canòdrom’s technical office, explained that the youth developed a critical awareness of the responsibility for the content they publish on social media, thanks to this study.

Music and community for a festive closing

This second episode of Ràdio Canòdrom concluded with a live concert by the local band Km.0, who got participants dancing to rumbas dedicated to the city of Barcelona, festive trumpets, and optimistic lyrics. Their sound always revolves around a fresh and festive pop, with electronic elements playing a significant role. It’s been a year since they released their first album, which they performed on the stands of the Canòdrom for the whole neighborhood, situated between the two major festivals, the Indians and the Congrés.
